    Soil health matters

Our health is intertwined with the earth– from the soil beneath our feet, to the food we eat, to the water we drink, to the air that fills our lungs.  Soil health = food quality = human health.

As a mother it has been exciting and terrifying to learn about the significance of soil health. Plants and animals raised in nutritionally-depleted soil create nutritionally-depleted foods.  Plants and animals raised in nutrient-rich soil create nutritionally-rich foods.  The trouble is, you can’t tell just by looking at it.  No product in the grocery store will tell you this on the label.

We need food from healthy soils to raise healthy children. According to Dr. Zach Bush MD, 46% of children have a chronic health condition.  Not only am I concerned about the health of my child, I’m concerned about the health of the planet my child will be left with. The UN currently reports we only have 60 years of food-growing top soil remaining if current soil degradation continues.

That’s why, at Jako Farm, we’ve decided to devote 2019 to this focus.

We’re joining a movement to care for the soil

Over the last two years, we’ve become increasingly aware of the regenerative agriculture movement that is taking place. Scientists, parents, farmers, doctors, ranchers, food producers and others are coming together to talk about how we can re-build the soil.   This leads to improvements in carbon sequestration, water restoration, nutrient dense food, restored ecosystems, and farmer sustainability.

Regenerative agriculture is a movement worth knowing about.  Check out this 3-minute video:

On March 20-21, two of the world’s leading authorities on soil health and nutrition and how it relates to human health (including Dr. Zach Bush) will be speaking in Emporia, Kansas. Jako Farm will be there and we’d love for you to join us at Soil: In Sickness and Health. (Click on the link for registration and information.  Mention “Jako Farm” and they’ll waive the late fee. There are also a few scholarships available.)
