• 5 steps for making this Thanksgiving your best ever

Your best Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

Forget the stress, this year let’s enjoy Thanksgiving like it’s meant to be enjoyed.  No matter how nutty your family can be or how picky the eaters, here are a few tricks for making your holiday enjoyable and memorable.

    1.  Put a beverage in their hands

Whether you’re accommodating out-of-towners or just your own brood, start the event off with something fun to drink.  It sets people at ease and starts the party off in a festive way.  (Take it from an introvert, it’s much easier to chat with cousins I don’t know well if there’s something in my hand.)

Need ideas?  We recommend hot or cold apple cider served in mugs or stemware, or hot chocolate made from JakoPure milk.

    2.  Serve simple foods that you can feel good about

Sure, it’s fun every once in a while to make the fancy French stuffed chicken breast roll tied with string and roasted over an open fire, but it’s also okay to keep it simple.  Pick foods that are nutritious, easy to make, and will make you feel good at the end of the meal.  Skip lots of breads and opt for more veggies instead.  Slow down and ask someone small to help you wash the carrots.  At the end of the meal you’ll be glad you did.

What we’ll be eating:  JakoPure Leg of lamb (one of our all-time favorites!), roasted sweet potatoes, and a big green salad.  You can find all of those items (and more you can feel good about) in the farm store.

    3.  Be thankful together

There’s nothing that quite unites people like thankfulness.  Go around the table and ask everyone– large or small– to name one thing they have been thankful for this year.  You might also ask them to tell a followup story about that thing.  Gratitude changes the atmosphere of many a conversation, and you may disagree with everything uncle Joe says, but it’s hard to disagree with blessings.

    4.  Do not skip the dessert

It’s Thanksgiving, after all, so splurge a little!  Make your favorite dessert, and put a generous helping of JakoPure whipped cream on top.  (Surprise!  We still have fresh cream!)  Every fall before we stop milking, Ken takes the last of the fresh cream and vacuum seals it, which keeps it fresh for weeks.  He squirrels it away until Thanksgiving so we can all have whipped cream for dessert.  He’s pulled it out of hiding and, while supplies last, get your JakoPure fresh cream in the farm store.  Thanks, Ken!

    5.  Do something active and outside

Resist the pull of the TV and the recliner, and opt to end the meal outside!  Throw a football, go on a walk, rake leaves, or explore a part of your property you don’t spend much time in.  Get crazy and even serve dessert outside!  You’ll probably find that being outside is just one more way to create a day that is intentional, meaningful, and connects people together.  You can watch the game in a few minutes.  First, get outside.

Happy thanksgiving from our family to yours!
