• Breeding for spring, fall fryers have arrived, and more

    It’s breeding time!

We are just ending breeding season for the milking cows, which means the bulls have been with the cows for 50 days.  Like humans, cows have a nine-month gestation.  Because we’re a seasonal farm, we exactly plan our breeding schedule so that calves are born during a 50-day span in April and May.  At the end of this week, the bulls will go back to their own pasture where they will happily stay until they are needed again next summer.  (Did you know that we’re working toward an exclusively A2/A2 milking herd?  Our breeding stock is selected for these genetic traits.)

    Fall fryers happily growing

This week we welcomed a new batch of fryer chicks to Jako Farm!  These birds will grow for eight weeks (exclusively on pasture for at last five weeks) before being butchered.  This also means that we have fryer feed available through the end of September.

    Free documentary series begins tomorrow

This past week, Ken attended Gail Fuller’s Field School, an annual gathering of farmers working toward healthy soil, healthy animals, and healthy humans.  The focus of the school was the devastating effects of GMOs and glyco-phosphates (the active ingredient in RoundUp) on soil, animals, and humans.  GMOs Revealed is a free, 9-day documentary series which begins tomorrow.  Sign up here.
